Are We Ready for a Post-LMS World?

Lou Pugliese, Chairman and CEO of Moodlerooms, “Effective e-learning design, as a lowest common denominator, will embrace nimble, interoperable, modular infrastructure in ways that make learning contemporary, relevant, and engaging.”

Learning Management Systems (LMS) 3.0 design focuses on four essential applications: learning grids, e-learning intelligence, content clouds, and open architecture.

Flubaroo | Grading Made Easy

We are always looking for alternatives to Scantron testing and this one arrived in my EDTECH LISTSRV this morning. Since our students have Gmail - they also have access to GoogleDocs. Our staff and faculty email address can be used to access the curry.edu Google domain (this is another blog post for another time!), so I decided to try this product out.

Navigating useful education technology products from the not so useful can be like sitting in Cape Cod traffic on a summer Friday afternoon; painful and takes way too long. However, Flubaroo was amazingly simple and delivered what it promised. This makes me happy.

So what is it?

Flubaroo is a free tool that helps you quickly grade multiple-choice or fill-in-blank assignments. Flubaroo also:

  • Computes average assignment score.
  • Computes average score per question, and flags low-scoring questions.
  • Shows you a grade distribution graph.
  • Gives you the option to email each student their grade, and an answer key.

How cool is that? And, it’s free!

Next up, I’ll work on some directions for linking your Curry email to the curry.edu Google domain. It would be a shame to share this tool and not have you use it!

*scratching head* What exactly is Instructional Technology?

Atomic Learning | 24/7 tutorial access

Our campus has partnered with Atomic Learning to provide access to a time-saving resource to address software training and support the moment it is needed. All faculty, staff and students now have access to over 50,000 how-to tutorials on over 205 applications—all at your fingertips 24 hours a day from campus or home. Whether you already have a solid understanding of the technology available to you or are beginning to learn, Atomic Learning’s tutorials make certain the answers to your “How do I do that?” questions are just a click away.

How do I find it?
Go to my.curry.edu and login with your My Curry portal username and password > click the Atomic Learning icon found on the left side Quick Launch panel > you will be asked to enter your My Curry account information again.

What will I find there?
Training on common software such as Word, PowerPoint®, Excel®, Adobe® Creative Suite, Skype™, SPSS®, twitter™, and Google™ Docs, and technology workshops like How to be an Effective Online Student and APA and MLA Research

I want to offer an online course

“I have a camcorder; we can just set it up on a tv tray and press record. How hard could that be? I’m a tenured professor that has been published in 300 journals nationally, internationally, intergalacticly…”

“…And I am the Gatekeeper of the Internet.”

Learning Analytics

Interested in Learning Analytics?

Don’t know what that is?

Check out the 2011 Horizon Report (link above) and see what the collaborative efforts of The New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative have identified as the most important higher education trends and challenges for the next five years. The Horizon Report, consistent in format for the past 10 years, examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning, and creative inquiry.

If you’re already at the forefront of this five year prediction, Good For You! Submit a paper to the first North East Regional Learning Analytics Symposium. The deadline for full papers and poster submissions is September 26th, 2011. Of course, spectating is allowed, so just attending on January 13th, 2012 because you’re interested is OK too!
